Who is responsible for missing John Naisby? Social media or John?

Online technology is a scary world, from a public relations perspective it makes me wonder whether or not social media organisations such as Facebook Twitter and My space, have come to todays society to create havoc  or to actually better the lives of citizens today, . Retired love struck 83 year old Engineer John Robertson Naisby has been missing since 15 february 2012,after he travelled from Cape town to meet 51 year old kidnapper,  facebook lover Zaheera Wookey in Johannesburg. When Sunday Times asked Zaheera Wookey  how the loving couple met on facebook she expressed defensively " You can meet people all over the world on Facebook cant you?" "The police are investigating and I want nothing to do with this".She claims that her and John exchanged email addresses and spoke once or twice a week.  read more on :

The question is what is Facebook doing to secure your personal information?

Are citizens  using Facebook as a tool to kidnap innocent victims?

Should social media tools allow for contact details to be published and risk being  tracked through requiring citizens to leave their personal phonenumbers  on  social media networks for everyone to see?

When you take a look at this story it is one stranger meeting another stranger, is the social media to be blamed? We as cyber users have to be carefull and know that agreeing to meet a stranger is not something you can do alone.

@ Thee workplace, I agree that we need to careful on who we decide to meet. I dont think social media can be blamed but it is a contributing factor because these two lovers may have never met had it noot been for social media. People also have a responsibility to act responsibly.

Firstly, the media is not to blame in this matter - if you do some digging you'll know why. Secondly, they weren't lovers. Thirdly, some serial killers will go at any length to get money and your life! [iol, June 24 2012 at 01:05pm]

In other cases, I would also not agree that the media is to blame, people need to be responsible and vigilant for what they write and put up online.

@ Anonymous, intersting points although romantic emails and cute pet names are exchanged between lovers. People do need to be responsible internet users.
